It has been almost three years to the day since I last posted. But I was so moved by this young girl’s initiative and message I felt I had to come out of hiding.
Leah Nelson is only 10, but she is making her mark on those who meet her. Leah is spearheading her #BecuzICare11 campaign. (@BecuzICare11) It is simple enough, she greets people outside of her local market in West Sacramento and gives them a loom bracelet she has made, with a simple ask...Be kind. Just one act of kindness is all she asks and then pass the bracelet on to the next person with the same message.
Leah was motivated by recent events, all the anger and violence caused her to try and think of a way to make people better. She went with what she knows, making loom bracelets and then just asking people to be what she feels they are capable of. It is all so simple sometimes. It won’t solve the racism and xenophobia and misogyny and classism that beset our society. But maybe, in a small way, it can allow us to be far more constructive in trying to solve our issues than by yelling past each other.
“I just want the world to be a better place. I mean there’s many issues and people are mad about the issues, and if you’re mad about the issues, why don’t you take action to try and change them?” she says.
